Home Remedies For Dry & Itchy Skin

Dry and itchy skin is a problem faced by many of us every day, especially during the winter season. However, dry skin need not be just because of the climatic conditions. Lack of proper hydration, thyroid disorders and certain medicines too are to be blamed for this condition.

We live in a polluted environment which too is a major cause for dry skin. Dry skin being a cosmetic problem must be treated effectively in order to prevent premature ageing of the skin and formation of wrinkles. Fortunately, a number of home remedies exist for treating dry skin effectively. Here are a few of them which you can try at the comfort of your home.

Aloe Vera
When the skin becomes dry, apply aloe vera on the skin and moisturise it to prevent wrinkles and scaling of the skin Aloe vera can be applied as often as you want to keep the dryness at bay. The dead skin cells that are accumulated on the top layer of skin will be removed with constant application and the skin beneath will be revealed to you within days of application.

Tea Tree Oil
Dilute tea tree oil along with some olive oil and apply on the dry skin. Tea tree oil is acidic and will help in exfoliating the dead skin cells on top. It being a germicide helps too as it can remove all kinds of acne and pimple formations as well by removing bacterial and fungal action on the skin.

Avocado
Avocados are rich in fat and can remove skin dryness with constant application.  Add as many avocados as you can in your food when you have dry skin. For external application, make a paste of avocados and apply on the skin. Allow it to remain for half an hour before washing off. This will make your skin well nourished and also render it good colour.

Flax Seeds
The oil extracted from flax seeds is rich in omega 3 fatty acids that moisturises the skin. Use flax seed oil for massaging the dry skin and consume flax seeds or use the oil for dressing your salad. Flax seeds will protect your skin from the damage caused by free radicals.

Vegetable Oils
Any vegetable oil can be used for massaging your dry skin. This can be sunflower, peanut, olive or coconut oil. Massage for about 15 minutes every day for great results. This will prevent skin dryness and accumulation of dead cells on the skin.

Baking Soda
Baking soda can be used for a warm bath to remove the dead cells and also prevent dryness from the skin. Add a cup of baking soda to warm water in the tub and soak for 15 minutes. Make sure that the water is not too hot as this can make the skin more dry after the bath. Add a few drops of olive oil to combat the dryness after the bath.

Oatmeal
Rich in vitamin E oatmeal can be used for rubbing on the dry skin and removing the dead cells. Alternately, add a cup of oatmeal to a warm water tub and soak for half an hour to remove dryness.
