Wowoto H8 Video Projector Review

The China hardware industry has never been one time a stagnant one. Day by day, the scene releases updates to existing technologies and innovations. “Updates” as used in this context refers to upgrades in processes, ease of product usage, and likewise, cheaper products that are overshadowing their expensive counterparts. The list goes on and on.

The projector subset industry of the Chinese tech scene is one that has been witnessing steady growth over the years. The industry has witnessed the birth of the best and cheapest projectors we have seen so far. I mean, back in the past, projectors were pricey electrical/ electronic appliances that cost a fortune. Now, projectors that cost less than $50, $100, and $150 have dominated the market in large numbers. Call them budget projectors.

The Wowoto H8 projector, however, lies in the midrange region. Manufactured by a Chinese firm called Wowoto. The H8 is a portable true HD projector which is a little bit pricier than many other products from rivalry brands. Truly, a true-HD experience is not enough convincing reason to shell out 400 boxes ($400) for a projector, but some other upsides like the Android OS, the processor, and brightness level are.

To find out if the Wowoto H8 is truly worth the $400 price tag, or the stated specs, features and hype are just marketing gimmicks to trick users into buying, we subject the product to some test.

Design and Appearance

I will talk about the first exciting aspect of the Wowoto H8 projector. And though the component I choose to speak about first may not seem all relevant to this discussion, it is to me.

The packaging of this projector is top-notch! In fact, this has got to be the best package I’ve seen a projector come in. The package is a rectangular wood-like hard carton with a glossy gold-plated text inscription on it. The package is simplistic, yet stunning!

When unboxed, the following accessories ships alongside the projector itself:

Instruction manual (in English & Chinese), remote control, a pair of AAA batteries, power cord, audio-video (AV) cable, and interestingly, an HDMI cable.

It’s rare seeing projectors coming out of the box with an HDMI cable as an accessory. But considering the buy price of this projector, one should not be wowed. Now, let’s have a look at the best projector.

Encapsulated in a glossy monochrome (Black and White) plastic enclosure, the Wowoto H8 is a good sight to the eye. Another thing to love about this product is the size portability and compactness. The H8 is about the same length and width as a tablet but only thicker (3.5cm).

Lens, Infrared (IR) sensor, and air vent are arranged on the front from left to right. The air vent on the front is specially designed to Foster heat dissipation and cool the projector during usage.

To the right-hand side, there’s the power button and built-in speaker. The speaker did pretty good during gaming but could do a better when watching a movie. On paper, sound and loudness level of the Wowoto H8 projector is 22 – 28dB.

The top of the projector is blank and houses no important component. Normally, one would expect to see some buttons or keys, but this projector is solely controlled by the remote. On the flip side, four feet aids the proper stance of the projector on tables or floors. Should you want to adjust the projector’s view to a slightly higher level, there is a kickstand at the bottom to raise the frontal of the projector a bit slightly.

Right in the middle is a screw-port to attach the Wowoto H8 to a tripod or the ceiling.

Ports

Depending on what you want to watch or do on this projector, the Wowoto H8 comes with numerous connectivity options for that. Both the USB ports (USB 2.0 & 3.0) are available for connecting the projector to external storage or phone, TF card slot, HDMI port, AV, headphone jack, and a VGA port.

Display Quality

With a native resolution of the projector ranging as 1280 x 800, the Wowoto H8 performs brilliantly, particularly when connected to PC. Colors, images, and texts also come out quite well when projction is done from an external storage or HDMI source. Wowoto says the H8 is a 1080P projector. Well, it seems pretty much like it as images were sharp and Crystal.

At 2000 Lumens, the LED projection is bright enough to give a true cinematic experience in your home when the lights are out. In the dim light, or partially lit rooms, images fade out a bit, but they are still visible.

When placed at about 3-4 meters away from the board, the Wowoto H8 gave the best visuals. Carrying the projector to about 5 meters away from the board resulted in faded detail. Size of projection on the board maxed about 250 – 300 inch.

Connectivity

I mentioned earlier that there are numerous means through which you can view files on this projector. Digitally, the onboard Android KitKat interface makes it easier to access files on external storage sticks. The connection can also be via Bluetooth.

There are built-in applications like Netflix, YouTube, Browser, BBC News  etc., where you can stream contents wirelessly. The projector also comes with PlayStore pre-installed, but you should know that not all apps on the PlayStore will work properly on the H8 – some may not even work at all.

Using the HDMI cable, connecting to the Sony PS4 game system was smooth and worked pretty easy. The display was also good. Video contents are played with the MX Player application, but you are free to download another video app if you do not like the MX Player interface.

Other features: Wowoto H8 Projector

The Wowoto H8 uses LED bulbs that have a lamp life of 30,000 hours, that’s according to Wowoto. The bulbs are super bright and can last between 2-5 years if you use the projector for 24-hours every day. Usage can go as long as 10-15 years. This is a type of projector you buy for long-term usage, although, you most likely would get a replacement before the lamp runs out of life as better alternatives would have been developed.
