The Top 15 Chinese Noodle Recipes

Thick or thin, sold dry or fresh, made with wheat, rice or mung bean flour, noodles are a staple in Chinese cooking. From Sichuan Dan Dan Mein to hearty Zhajiangmian, and a quick and easy lo mein dish, here is a selection of popular Chinese noodle recipes.

1. Chicken Chow Mein :

In this recipe noodles are paired with chicken and a colourful assortment of vegetables, including bok choy, celery and red bell pepper, in an oyster-flavoured sauce.

2. Simple Chicken Chow Mein:

This simple chicken chow mein recipe uses Chinese dried noodles. You can also use egg noodles if you prefer. Another special ingredient is Chinese white chive but you can replace this ingredient with other vegetables including bean sprouts, leeks, napa cabbage or bok choy.

3. Classic Home Made Noodle Salad:

This classic home made noodle salad is a very popular dish in Taiwan and China. It’s especially popular during the summer time as summers in Taiwan and China are always really hot and humid so this noodle salad is made cold with a delicious sauce and refreshing ingredients to help people regain their appetite during this kind of hot weather.

The main ingredient of the sauce for this noodle salad is white sesame paste. You can also use tahini sauce to replace the Chinese white sesame paste if you can get hold of it.

Chinese people usually make this noodle salad with julienned cucumber, carrot, mung bean sprout and boiled or steamed chicken breast.

4. Zhajiangmian:

Zhajiangmian (炸醬麵) is one of my favourite Chinese noodle dish. There are many countries in the East that serve this delicious noodle dish with many different ingredients.

Taiwanese people like to cook the sauce with mince, extra firm tofu, chili bean sauce, French beans and sweet bean sauce.

But for this version of Zhajiangmian I used edamame beans instead of French beans.

5. Beef Chow Mein

A quick and easy version of beef chow mein recipe.

6. Chicken Lo Mein

Chicken Lo Mein makes a great lunch, dinner or late night snack. If you want a thicker sauce, whisk 2 teaspoons of cornstarch into the sauce before adding into the wok.

In this recipe thin Hakka noodles are tossed with a delicious dressing that includes sesame paste, sesame oil, two types of soy sauce and honey. Roasted peanuts add the final touch.

8. Shanghai Stir-fry Noodles (with chicken)

Shanghai noodles are thick noodles that are packaged in plastic bags and sold fresh in Asian markets. If Shanghai noodles are unavailable, feel free to substitute with Japanese Udon noodles, or thick Italian spaghetti-style pasta, such as linguini.

With chicken, shrimp, and a spicy sauce made with hot chilli oil.

10. Noodles With Meat Sauce

A dish from northern China, with noodles coated in a hearty meat sauce made with ground pork or beef, hoisin sauce and brown bean sauce. Serve it as is, or in the traditional style with an assortment of vegetable garnishes.

11. Pan Fried Noodles

This recipe goes by several different names, including “both sides browned” and “twice browned” noodles.

In all cases the boiled noodles are browned on one side, then turned over and cooked on the other side.

12. Singapore Noodles

Singapore-Style noodles (新加坡炒米粉, 星洲炒米) is a very popular dish in Chinese takeaways and restaurants in the UK. Some restaurants like to use Char Siu Pork as one of the main ingredients to make this dish but for my recipe I’m going to use chicken breast as this is an ingredient that almost anyone can buy.

Noodles symbolize a long life in Chinese culture, so it’s no surprise that you’ll frequently find this popular dish served on birthdays and other festive occasions.
