As we all know Android Oreo 8.0 is the latest version of Android operating system that was released on 21st August 2017. This new version of android brings lots of new features like picture-in-picture mode, notification channel, app badges but among all the new features the one really unique feature that comes with Android Oreo is the adaptive icons.
Now for those who don’t know what that is, Adaptive icons basically has the ability to change the shape of your system icons. Meaning if you don’t like your default icons then you can completely change the shape of your icons using Adaptive icon feature.
Adaptive Icons have the potential to shake up Android home screens, app drawers, and Android theming in a lot of really fun ways. Users won’t have to use an icon pack to get some consistency in their app drawer; manufacturers can keep their own style while keeping things even; and developers won’t have to worry about their icon being shrunk and shoved into awkward, off-colour masks.
Currently this feature is only available for nexus and pixel devices but there is a very simple way through which you can get the same feature on any android device by using the latest beta update of Nova Launcher 5.1.1
So, let’s check out how you can set things up.
Now first download the Nova launcher beta 5.1.1. Once that is done head over to the setting menu and then search for the security option and from here you just have to enable the unknown sources and you are good to go.
Now you can simply install the nova launcher and set things up according to your preference.
Once setup is finished press on an empty space on your home screen and then select the settings option to enter into the Nova launcher app settings.
Now select the Look and feel option and from here enable the adaptive icons. Now to access to icon shapes click on the next option that says adaptive icon shape. So, from here you can choose the different shapes for your icon according to your preference. As of now there are 5 icon shapes available that are round, squircle, rounded square, square and teardrop.
Now if you want to apply any of the following icon shape just select that and you are done it’s as simple as that. Now you can see the changes by going to your home screen. This feature basically creates a shape mask over your default icons and give you the freedom to change it and now you don’t have to install tons of icons just the change your system icons. Now this feature is still in beta but it works fine, hope developers will add some new options in the coming future.
Now I know that you can get this same feature by installing some 3rd party apps like Adaptions and I had tried that personally, but in my opinion, I think the way Nova launcher has implemented this Adaptive icon feature is more practical and somewhere close to the original feature from nexus and pixel devices.
